When Does Mosquito Season Start in the Lowcountry?

Coastal South Carolina's mosquito season starts earlier and runs longer than most of the country. Here's what to expect and how to get ahead of it.

In most of the country, mosquito season is a summer problem. Along the coast, mild winters and humid springs mean activity can start as early as March and run through October or later.

Why it starts so early here

Mosquito eggs can survive through a mild winter in damp soil and leaf litter, hatching as soon as temperatures climb into the 50s. A few warm days in late winter is often all it takes.

Standing water is the real driver

Gutters, plant saucers, tarps, and low spots in the yard collect just enough water for mosquitoes to breed. Walking the property after heavy rain and dumping anything holding water is the single most effective thing a homeowner can do between treatments.

What a seasonal plan covers

A mosquito treatment plan targets breeding sites directly and applies a barrier spray to vegetation and shaded resting areas, cutting populations well below what a homeowner can manage with store-bought sprays alone. Learn more about our mosquito treatment plans.
